Richard Wilson

I admire Wilson’s piece titled “20:50″as it forces the viewer to look in areas of a room that would usually go unnoticed. This is a great example of a site specific piece as the way you view the piece depends wholly on what room it has been set up in. As the rooms are filled with oil, I like how Wilson cut out a slither of a walk way leading into different areas of each room so that the view also has the opportunity to become part of the work if they choose. As the reflection off of the oil is so clear and still, it almost makes the viewer feel as if they have entered an alternate universe by not knowing which way was the correct way up and enahnced by the over powering smell of motor oil. I also admire the simplicity of this piece, that Wilson has essentially just given us a reflection of something as unordinary a ceiling and created this powerful piece of work. I like the idea of creating something simple that has a big effect on the viewer, and also find interesting the idea of making people look where they would usually ignore. These are all ideas I will keep in mind when developing my own work.
